AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("BISMARCK"), TO HIS BANKERS, S. BLEICHRÖDER IN BERLIN, 6 APRIL 1862

in German, requesting them to forward a note to Rothschild, with the order to sell some nine thousand shares, with the proviso that this should be reconsidered if really bad conditions on the Stock Exchange cause a fall of more than five percent from the current price of 141-42, informing them that he will visit Berlin soon after Easter, when he can discuss reinvestment with them in person, 2 pages, 8vo (c.21.8 x 14.3cm), annotated by the recipient across the corners in red crayon and ink, St Petersburg, 6 April (new style) 1862 

This letter dates from an important moment in Bismarck's rise to complete power, which led to the unification of Germany and the creation of the German Empire. Bismarck spent the years 1858-1862 abroad, as Ambassador to Russia and then France, until Wilhelm I recalled him to help with a financial crisis. In return, Bismarck demanded total control of foreign affairs and was eventually appointed Minister President and Foreign Minister.
