Description

A Spanish Baroque walnut trestle table

17th century

single plank top, with iron struts

77.5cm. high, 148.5cm. wide, 85.5cm. deep; 2ft. 6 1/2 in., 4ft. 10 1/2 in., 2ft. 9 5/8 in.

The present table embodies the characteristics of Spanish furniture: sobriety and a serenity of line. Perhaps the most authentic form of Spanish furniture, the trestle table features a thick slab of walnut with iron fasteners or fiadores springing from the chambrana (stretcher) which joins each pair of feet terminating with a scroll. Practicality certainly determined the structure of this piece of furniture, tables like this could be moved and transported very easily. Related examples are illustrated in L. Feduchi, El Mueble Español, 1969, pp. 112-113 and a very similar table was sold Sotheby's London, 2-13 November 2020, lot 11.
