JOHN LENNON

BROWN LEATHER BELT STAGE-WORN BY LENNON IN HAMBURG

reddish brown leather strap inset with strip of olive leather, metal buckle with four ornamental holes, stamped "Pullman | France" on the inside, 55mm x 1060mm

[with:] Tony Sheridan, letter of authenticity recalling that John Lennon gave him this belt, which he had bought in Paris, at the Star Club, Hamburg, in 1962, 2 pages, signed and dated, 2005; [also with:] a copy of a letter by the singer Roy Young confirming that Lennon gave this belt to Sheridan, 2003

John can be seen wearing what appears to be this belt in a series of photographs of John, Paul and George taken on a Hamburg rooftop in the spring of 1961, during The Beatles second residency in the city. They were showing off their newly completed leather look, and are wearing Texan leather boots, leather trousers and jackets, and matching pink caps. According to Sheridan, however, Lennon bought the belt during his holiday in Paris with Paul in October 1961.
