Collection Albin Schram, Switzerland (purchased at the above sale)
Thence by descent to the present owner
At the end of the 1920s, Kupka abandoned the pure abstraction of the previous years and embarked upon a series of paintings inspired by machinery. He drew and painted from close observation and developed a formal language that bridged figuration and abstraction. The series was completely unanticipated and in artistic terms was totally unique. Other examples from this magnificent series exist in the collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, Madrid.
