Born in Saitama, Japan, Yasushi Tanaka’s artistic training took place in Seattle, USA, where he arrived in 1904 and began to exhibit in 1915. Feeling that he was poorly understood by the American critical establishment, in 1920 he decided to move to Paris, where he joined a large community of Japanese artists – the most prominent being Foujita – who were seeking to round off their artistic training and expose themselves to modern trends in Western painting.
Tanaka settled more easily into Parisian artistic life, exhibiting regularly at the Salons of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, as well as the Salon d’Automne. He was friendly with James Joyce, whose portrait he painted, as well as that of his wife Nora.

Né à Saitama, au Japon, Yasushi Tanaka entreprend son éducation artistique aux Etats-Unis, à Seattle, où il se rend dès 1904 et commence à exposer en 1915. S’estimant mal jugé par la critique américaine, il décide, en 1920, de s’installer à Paris, où une importante communauté d’artistes japonais, dont le plus éminent est Foujita, se sont rendus dans le but de parfaire leur formation artistique et de s’ouvrir aux courants modernes de la peinture occidentale.
Tanaka s’intégra plus facilement à la vie artistique parisienne, exposant régulièrement aux Salons de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, aussi bien qu’au Salon d’Automne. Il fréquenta également James Joyce, dont il fit le portrait, ainsi que celui de son épouse Nora.
