ATTRIBUTED TO TADDEO ZUCCARO | THE FLAGELLATION OF CHRIST

This composition is based on the fresco by Taddeo Zuccaro, in the Mattei Chapel of the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione in Rome, although the present painting has some variations, especially in the background architecture.

Despite its proximity to Taddeo’s composition, the present painting contains a figure in the upper part who is observing the scene below. This figure appears in an engraving by Cherubino Alberti (1553-1615) after a work by Taddeo Zuccaro and dated 1574 (Fig. 1). Reversed in relation to the present work, could the print be based on this composition, which might then be a ricordo after the fresco in the Mattei Chapel?

Taddeo Zuccaro’s work in turn derives from the fresco by Sebastiano del Piombo (circa 1485-1547), in the Borgherini Chapel in the church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome. Here again, there are many variations between the two: only four figures surround Christ in Sebastiano’s painting.

Finally, a drawing by Michelangelo (1475-1564), in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1895,0915.500), is a representation of this same scene.

La composition reprend celle de la fresque de Taddeo Zuccaro, réalisée dans la chapelle Mattei de l’église Santa Maria della Consolazione à Rome, avec laquelle le présent tableau présente toutefois des variantes dans l’architecture à l’arrière-plan notamment.

Proche de cette composition, il comporte cependant dans la partie supérieure un personnage qui observe la scène depuis le haut. Celui-ci se retrouve dans une gravure de Cherubino Alberti (1553-1615), réalisée d’après une œuvre de Taddeo Zuccaro, et datée de 1574 (Fig. 1). En sens inverse par rapport à notre tableau, celle-ci pourrait-elle se baser sur celui-ci, qui serait alors un riccordo réalisé d’après la fresque de la chapelle Mattei ?

L’œuvre de Taddeo Zuccaro dérive elle-même de la fresque de Sebastiano del Piombo (v. 1485-1547), exécutée dans la chapelle Borgherini de l’église San Pietro in Montorio à Rome ; là encore, des variantes sont notables : l’on ne compte que quatre personnages entourant le Christ.

Enfin, un dessin de Michel-Ange (1475-1564), conservé au British Museum à Londres (inv. n°1895,0915.500), représente cette même scène.
