Circa 1740-45


each modelled by J.J. Kaendler as a duck with a duckling forming the finial, both resting on grassy mounds, one with female predominantly grey and brown plumage, the other a male with predominantly purple and dark brow flecked plumage, the female example with blue crossed swords marks to back base and incised marks, puce painted 10. to interior, the male example with faint blue crossed sword marks to underside of base

See den Blaauen, A.L., Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 2000, no, 301, p. 413 for a related pair of gilt-bronze mounted boxes in the for of ducks.  The author notes an entry of Kaendler's workbook of April/May 1741 which refer to "Eine Butter Büchse, in Gestalt eines Entvogels".
