Louis I, (1786 —1868), King of Bavaria from 1825 to 1848, was the son of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (1756-1825) and the godson of King of France Louis XVI.

Known as an enthusiastic patron of the arts, his reign transformed Munich into one of the most influential cultural capitals of Europe. Passionate about ancient Greece and the Italian renaissance, his large-scale planning of Munich created the city’s present layout in the neoclassical style. He notably commissioned many representative buildings, among them the Ludwigskirche, the Siegestor, and the Odeon. Furthermore, parts of the King’s vast collection formed the nucleus of the Glyptothek and Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Louis I was a strong believer in the educative value and power of art and was crucial for the development of transforming princely art collections into public museums for the benefit of all citizens.

On the outbreak of the revolution of 1848, Louis I, whose romance with Eliza Rosanna Gilbert, Countess of Landsfeld, better known by her dancer’s stage name Lola Montez, had reduced his popularity significantly. He abdicated in favour of his eldest son Maximilian II (1811-1864).
