'Susanna and the Elders', a pair of Biblical Old Testament tapestry panels, Northern European,
17th century
Each woven with figure of Susanna at her bath in the formal gardens, flanked by two elders (Old Testament: Apocrypha), from whom she is eventually saved in the law court by Daniel, within a four-sided floral border, incorporating corner cartouches enclosing various motifs which could have appropriate symbolism, such as the ships (early Christian association with the ship being the refuge in which the faithful found safety and salvation), and the lower corners with figures holding an anchor (symbol of hope in early Christianity), and a pillar (symbol of spiritual strength and steadfastness); mounted within anti-reflective glazed frames (2)
