A Renaissance gilt, patinated and painted bronze and ebony automaton table clock with stackfreed, German, circa 1600


the movement with brass octagonal plates, standing barrels to both trains, steel wheelwork throughout with the exception of the replaced brass crown wheel, stackfreed to the going train with verge escapement and foliot, numbered external locking plate striking on a bell, the case in the form of a figure standing by a leaf-cast pole supporting a time globe, indicating the time with a pointer and turning his head as the hour is struck, a small monkey seated at his feet, the moulded octagonal ebony veneered base with turned gilt feet
