A pair of South Italian gilt-bronze mounted rosewood and kingwood marquetry commodes, Naples,
circa 1760
each with a rosso verona marble top, above two long drawers, later mounts
95cm. high, 151cm. wide, 70cm. deep; 3ft. 1 3/8 in., 4ft. 11 1/2 in., 2ft. 3 1/2 in.
These commodes adopting sober clean lines, a serpentine bombé front and sides with the added twist of inlaid geometric motifs are an important example of Neapolitan cabinet-making in the third quarter of the 18th century. Reflecting the transition in Naples from the rococo style to the neoclassical style, the sophisticated and here stained inlaid decoration, especially around the keyhole and inside the triangles on the sides, is particularly noteworthy. Related examples are illustrated in A. Murano, Il Mobile Napoletano del Settecento, Naples, 1977, tav.XXI and tav. XXXI). Similar pairs of commodes were sold Sotheby's London, 19 January 2016, lot 57 and Sotheby's New York, 1 October 2010, lot 84.
