The unusual inclusion of a stretcher joining the back legs, the finely sculpted claw-and-ball feet with distinctive open talons and refined asymmetrical acanthus-carved knees all suggest these chairs were produced by an important regional workshop outside London, possibly in the North of England or Ireland.
The intricately drawn and pierced splat is reminiscent of chair designs published by the painter William de la Cour in his First Book of Ornament in 1741. A set of four similar chairs was sold Sotheby's Parke Bernet, New York, 21 October 1978, lot 387, and a further related group of four sold Sotheby's New York, 25 January 1986, lot 145. Both sets have comparable designs to the splat but with variations and uncarved crest rails
