A CONTINENTAL PORCELAIN GILT-METAL MOUNTED TABLE FOUNTAIN AND BASIN, LATE 19TH CENTURY


after the Meissen model by Johann Gottlieb Kirchner, the reservoir formed as a large shell held by a figure of Neptune, raised and supported by a separate section formed of two satyrs upon rockwork, the scroll-edged basin painted with a Chinoiserie scene after Johann Gregorius Höroldt

The present lot is a direct copy of the Meissen fountain in the Hetjens-Museum, Deutsche Keramikmuseum, Düsseldorf, illustrated in Alfred Ziffer, "'...skillfully made ready for moulding...': The Work of Johann Joachim Kaendler'", in Ulrich Pietsch and Claudia Ban (eds.), Triumph of the Blue Swords: Meissen Porcelain for Aristocracy and Bourgeoisie, 1710-15, exh. cat., 2010, pp. 296-97, no. 302. For further reading on this Meissen fountain model see Jeffrey Munger, European Porcelain in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2018, New York, pp. 72-74, no. 19, who illustrates the example from the collection gifted by R. Thornton Wilson, in memory of Florence Ellsworth Wilson in 1954. Munger lists the other known examples which include that in the Ludwig Collection, Bamberg, formerly in the Maurice de Rothschild Collection, sold, Christie's New York, March 28, 1977, lot 79; and a second, sold, Christie's New York, June 30, 1980, lot 261.
