At the beginning of the 19th century, the Swiss physician, surgeon and naturalist Louis Jurine (1751-1819), and the mineralogist Cyprien-Prosper Brard (1786-1838) started to collect rocks, minerals, and fossils from the Mont Blanc massif. Their collection including more than 4,000 samples, was acquired by the University of the Sorbonne in 1847, for a considerable sum of 20,000 Francs.

Following this taste for classifying minerals like Jurine, several inhabitants near the Mont Blanc massif began to create small collections to sell to foreigners. The present is an example of this fashion and was most probably assembled by Joseph-Marie Deschamps (see Annales de la Chambre Royale d'agriculture et de commerce de Savoie, Vol. 3., 1846, p.45).
