An Italian carved rosso antico tazza,
mid-19th century, in the manner of Benedetto Boschetti
of square shape, with carved swans to corners below egg and dart frieze, the interior with gadrooned carved roundel, on a fluted spreading columnar support on square plinth

This tazza is related to the work of Benedetto Boschetti, established in Rome circa 1820 on Via Condotti, on the basis of close comparisons with Boschetti’s signed and attributed works which share a similar style and quality as the present. Key characteristics of Boschetti's work which successfully catered to the demand of Grand Tourists include meticulously carved stones, the shape of the tazza, thin reliefs and key neoclassical decorative elements such as masks, egg and dart friezes, and gadroons.
Whilst Boschetti and his workshop used the same designs on several occasions, a wide variety of coloured stones was used. Indeed, examples after the same model as the present and also in the manner of Boschetti have been recorded:
- one in Siena marble possibly from the workshops of Benedetto Boschetti, sold at Christie’s London, 7 February 2001, lot 330;
- one in nero antico marble possibly from the workshops of Benedetto Boschetti, sold at Christie’s London, 4 October 2005, lot 143.
A similar tazza in the collections of the Vatican was drawn by C.H. Tatham in Etchings representing the best Examples of Ancient Ornamental Architecture (fig.1).
