Description

Lot of (4) Rod Carew Gillette All Star Top Vote Getter Awards From 1975, 1977, 1978 & 1979 (Carew Loa)

To put it succinctly, Rod Carew was the greatest second baseman of his era. From 1967 to 1985, the Panama-born slugger would win practically every award he was eligible for. Beginning with the Rookie of the Year Award in 1967, Carew took home the AL MVP Award in 1977, won seven batting championships and his humanitarian work earned him the coveted Roberto Clemente Award. Fans acknowledged his place as one of the game’s brightest stars by voting him to the All-Star team in 18 of the 19 years he played. It is the All-Star balloting that reveals Rod Carew’s real value as a ballplayer, for four times he received the most votes of any player from either league.

The “Gillette Award” was created especially to acknowledge this unique honor, and these are the four earned by Carew in 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979. Each award consists of a wood base upon which a brass panel reads, “The Gillette Award All-Star Election Champion by Vote of the Fans Rod Carew All-Star Game” followed by the year. A triangular plaque at the base is reserved for the player’s name, only two of which, the 1978 and 1979, have been engraved with Carew’s name. The awards show some wear from age and display, with some tarnishing on the brass panels and light finish loss on some edges of the wood base. One of the more unique baseball awards and one that truly shows how much the fans appreciated a player’s ability. These awards come with a LOA from Rod Carew.
