Collection of Helyn Goldenberg and Michael Alper, Chicago

Angel Otero is known for his process-based paintings and oil-skin collages, which draw on memories of his early life in Puerto Rico to examine the narrative value of physical mark making. Otero appropriates gestures associated with twentieth century painting, systematically deconstructing and reconstructing the works to yield new, physically-driven compositions.

Recent solo exhibitions of Otero’s work include those at Lehmann Maupin, New York; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston; and Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno, Spain. His work has been included in shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami; and Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco.

Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
