Simone Leigh's inter-disciplinary practice incorporates sculpture, video, and installation, all informed by her ongoing explorations of ethnography and the black female experience. Recently her practice has expanded to include “social sculpture”, which Leigh defines as social practice work that engages the public directly. Her works often employ materials and forms traditionally associated with African art, and her performance-influenced installations investigate the aesthetic ties between cultures, eras, and geographies. By engaging these territories, Leigh confronts concepts of the female body, race, beauty, and community.

Recent solo exhibitions of Leigh's work include those at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; New Museum, New York; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. She was the first artist to be commissioned for the High Line Plinth in New York, where her monumental sculpture Brick House was on view through October 2020. Leigh has been selected to represent the United States at the 2022 Venice Biennale, making her the first African-American woman to do so.
