Mernet Larsen’s paintings are simultaneously rooted in and distant from reality. She has been significantly influenced by the geometric abstractions of El Lissitzky, the narrative stylization of 12th Century Japanese paintings, and early Renaissance paintings. Larsen’s vertiginous spaces are often rendered in reverse perspective, with hard-edged figures that offer a distorted, yet familiar version of the world that is analogous and parallel to reality.

Recent solo exhibitions of Larsen’s work include those at James Cohan, New York; Various Small Fires Gallery, Los Angeles; Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, Sarasota. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York; Michael Jon Gallery, Detroit; and Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool.
