Cauleen Smith is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination. Operating in multiple materials and arenas, Smith roots her work firmly within the discourse of mid-twentieth-century experimental film. Drawing from structuralism, third world cinema, and science fiction, she makes work that deploys the tactics of these disciplines while offering a phenomenological experience for spectators and participants.

Recent solo exhibitions of Smith’s work include those at the Art Institute of Chicago; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; and the Studio Museum Harlem, New York. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the New Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary, Chicago. Her work was also included in the 2017 Whitney Biennial.

Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
