Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the launch of a new auction focused on early jewels and glyptics (engraved gems) from ancient Greece through to Regency Britain. This field has been a focus for collectors throughout the ages with early gems having been prized since antiquity. The sale is led by a rare cameo of René of Anjou, King of Naples (£50,000-70,000) and an exceptional Renaissance pendant with a Pelican in her Piety (£45,000-60,000). It includes superb ancient Greek gold jewellery, as well as cameos and intaglios by some of the greatest 18th-century engravers, notably Giovanni Pichler. The sale is comprised of quality early jewels and gems at a range of price points, from £1,000 to £50,000.

Please note that this plaque has been confirmed as the true pair to the Limoges enamel portrait of Louis XIII in the Louvre, Paris. Both medallions were offered in the sale of Marczell von Nemes in Munich on 16-19 June 1931 as lots 502 and 503. The present enamel of Anne of Austria was subsequently offered again at a Rudolf Lepke auction in Berlin on 12 June 1934 as lot 84.
