Necklace with Cameos representing Artemis and a Gryllus

chalcedony, set within gold pearl set mounts, within a necklace

the gryllus mount marked with a post-1893 French owl import stamp, numbered 75 for the Paris Assay Office

Artemis cameo: 30.8mm., 1.21in.

44.3mm., 1.74in. overall

Gryllus cameo: 21.5mm., 0.85in.

29.6mm., 1.16in. overall

This beautifully preserved necklace is mounted with a fine Neoclassical cameo of the goddess Artemis (Diana) and another of a fantastical gryllus. Grylloi are fanciful combinations of heads, both human and animal which were popular in antiquity; see, for example, the 2nd/3rd-century AD intaglio in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 41.160.655).
