The see of Calcutta was established in 1814, and encompassed much of the Indian subcontinent and Ceylon, along with Australia and parts of Africa. After lobbying for the position, on the 1st of June 1823, Heber was formally consecrated Bishop of Calcutta at Lambeth Palace. Shortly thereafter, he journeyed to India, where he was known for making friends with the local population, as well as the leaders of non-Anglican churches. 'Narrative of a Journey Through the Upper Provinces of India' chronicles Heber's travels through the country, and his impressions of the people and sights he encountered.
