A PAIR OF ENGLISH SILVER-GILT AND ENAMEL "PINEAPPLE" MINIATURE TORAH FINIALS, MAKER'S MARK -C, PROBABLY LONDON, 1804


the shafts chased with acanthus tips, engraved with crest and Hebrew motto, Hebrew inscriptions, one knop engraved "Philip Salomons Esq" in script, the upper part formed as a pineapple above two tiers of green enamel leaves, topped by two tiers of six scrolled arms separated by further leaves, gilt pineapple finials

marked on both with king's head, lion passant, and date letter I, one with maker's mark -C

Reuben David Sassoon (1834-1905), to his great-niece and sister-in-law
Flora Gubbay, Mrs. Solomon David Sassoon (1856-1936), no. 33; to her son
David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942), to his son
Rabbi Solomon David Sassoon of Letchworth (1915-1985), and by descent

The Hebrew inscription (repeated on both finials) reads: “A donation from that which God has bestowed upon me, Judah Aryeh, known as Leib, son of the departed Yitzhak Isaac, of blessed memory, in the year [5]595 [1835].”

Above the lion rampant: “Judah is a lion’s [aryeh] whelp” [Gen. 49:9].
