Count Piotr Alexandrovich Rumiantsev-Zadunaiski (1725-1796) was one of the most important Russian generals during the reign of Catherine The Great. He governed Little Russia in the name of Empress Catherine the Great from 1764 until her death in 1796. Monuments to his victories include the Kagul Obelisk in Tsarskoye Selo (1772) and the Rumyantsev Obelisk on Vasilievsky Island (1798–1801).

In 1770, he became a Field Marshal and received the order of St George first class.
