in Pan Slavic taste, the front and sides with medallions containing stylised birds on colourful translucent enamelled ground, the sides engraved in ‘July 1913 / The All-Russian competition’ Russian and 'July 1913 / Open Gentlemen's Singles / Championships of Russian / II prize’, the handle set with cabochon amethyst and quartz, struck on the base with maker’s initials, 84 standard

length over handle 27cm, 10 2/3in.

Charles Percy Dixon (1873-1939)

This kovsh was presented in 1913 to Charles Percy Dixon at the Russian Open Tennis Championship following his defeat, in the category of men's singles, by Count Mikhail Soumarokoff-Elston. Dixon won the doubles title at the same tournament, which was held at the Krestovsky Lawn Tennis Club in St Petersburg.


Dixon was one of Britain's foremost tennis players, leading Britain to wining four Olympic Gold medals, Wimbledon Doubles, the Australian Open and Davis Cup.
