Born and raised in Moscow, Vladimir Rossinsky was a well-known figure in the artistic circles of the city. At the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture he studied together with Viktor Borisov-Musatov, Maria Yakunchikova, as well as his future wife Elena Chichagova, the daughter of one of Moscow’s leading architects, Dmitry Chichagov.
Rossinsky was a member of the literature circle Sreda and painted several of its members, among them Sergei Rachmaninov, Feodor Chaliapin as well as actress Maria Andreeva, the partner of Maxim Gorky who also sat for Ilya Repin. Apart from his portraits, Rossinsky is perhaps best known for his drawings of Leo Tolstoy which were published as an album, as well as his advertising designs for the perfume manufacturer Brocard & Co.
