Of noble Polish descent, Hélène Oettingen made her way to Paris after her divorce from the tsarist officer Baron Otto von Oettingen. Her celebrated salons held at 229 Boulevard Raspail brought together artists and intellectuals such as Léopold Survage, Amadeo Modigliani, Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob. Inspired by Cubism, she embraced avant-garde tendencies in her work and achieved a reputation as an artist in her own right. Oettingen signed her works Francois Angiboult and she also wrote novels and poetry under different male pseudonyms.
