Village Pageant, Design for Le Coq d'Or

signed in Latin l.r.

gouache over pencil on artist's board

Board: 37 by 52.5cm, 14½ by 20¾in.

Framed: 59 by 74.5cm, 23¼ by 29¼in.

The top edge of the board is slightly uneven. There are two small areas of damage to the paper board either side of the centre of the top edge which have been crudely restored. There is a tear of approximately 1cm in the centre of the left edge and two to the top layer to the right of the centre of the bottom edge. There is light wear to the two bottom corners and a faint crease through the lower left one. A small puncture mark is visible below the centre of the right edge. There are a few light scratches to the paint layer which have resulted in very minor losses. The sheet has discoloured slightly and there are minor handling marks. The odd spot of foxing is visible in places. Framed and held behind plexiglass.

The work is executed on a Whatman board manufactured by the London artists' suppliers George Rowney & Co. The label on the reverse dates it to pre-1924 when the company amended its name.

Lot 67 in the sale, Set Design for Coq d'Or, is executed on the same board suggesting that both designs were for the original 1914 production staged by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris and London.
