Commissioned from the artist by Nicholas de Beauharnais, 4th Duke of Leuchtenberg (1843-1891)
The Leuchtenbergs' Palace near Peterhof was built by the architect Andrei Ivanovich Stuckenschneider for Maria Nikolaevna, the daughter of Nikolai I of Russia, and her husband Duke Maximilian von Leuchtenberg between 1839 and 1842. Stuckenschneider was then chief court architect and built a number of palaces for the Emperor's children including the Leuchtenbergs' St Petersburg residence, the Mariinsky Palace. Maria Nikolaevna and Maximilian's son Nicholas Maximilianovich de Beauharnais commissioned this view from Weiss, who had been court painter to his father, shortly before the panels of the Leuchtenberg horses (lot 4).
