Portrait of the Ballerina Vera Trefilova

signed in Latin, inscribed Trefilova and dated 1924 l.l.; further bearing Ancienne Douane and Galerie La Danse labels on the frame

oil on canvas

Canvas: 85 by 65.5cm, 33½ by 25¾in.

Framed: 102.5 by 82.5cm, 40¼ by 32½in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas is unlined and is securely stretched onto what is evidently the original keyed wooden stretcher. The canvas is inscribed in the lower left as seen from the reverse and is structurally sound and secure and it is obviously most encouraging to find the canvas in its original unlined state. There are, almost inevitably, faint upper and lower horizontal stretcherbar lines.

Paint surface

The paint surface has a dry appearance with minimal varnish. I could find no evidence of any retouching under ultraviolet light. There are some fine lines of drying craquelure within the thicker impasto which are secure and some tiny flecks of loss have occurred in the junctions of the lines of craquelure.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in very good condition and could benefit from light surface cleaning and revarnishing.

Condition 9 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Studio Sale) is not applicable to this lot.
