Larionov first met Diaghilev in the spring of 1903, at an exhibition in Moscow. His collaboration with him began in 1915, when Diaghilev invited Goncharova and Larionov to join him in Switzerland where he was trying to reform his ballet company which had dispersed at the start of the war.

This drawing is one in a series of pencil portraits of Diaghilev that the artist executed while working for the Ballets Russes. It was produced in Monte Carlo, where, in 1923, Diaghilev's company signed a contract with the Principality of Monaco to become the official ballet of the Monte Carlo Opera.
