Acquired from Nadia Benois by John Carr Doughty
Sotheby's London, Ballet Designs from the Collection of Mr and Mrs John Carr Doughty, 4 June 1981, lots 225 and 226
Acquired at the above sale by the present owners

These three designs for The Nutcracker were in the collection of John Carr Doughty a British knitwear designer whose company was based in Leicester, the centre of the British woollen industry. Both a fashion designer and eccentric inventor of pioneering knitting machinery, Carr Doughty amassed one of the finest private collections of designs for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The collection was taken on a much-lauded touring exhibition of the United Kingdom in 1967 by the Arts Council.
