Costume Design for an Angel in Liturgie

stamped with a monogram l.l.; further signed in Latin on the reverse

pencil, gouache and foiling on artist's board

Board: 53.5 by 38cm, 21 by 15in.

Framed: 65.5 by 48cm, 25¾ by 19in.

There is wear to the lower left corner with creasing across the stamped monogram. The surface has discoloured and there is mount staining along the edges. The angel's wing is composed of several joined pieces of paper which have been glued to the support. Some of the foiling is lifting and there are losses, notably to the halo, the silver sandals and the silver borders of the angel's tunic. There is staining in places and a general layer of surface dirt. The board is taped to a velvet mount along all four edges on the reverse. Framed and glazed.

The work is executed on the same George Rowney Whatman board as lots 67 and 95, and bears the stamp of an artists' suppliers in Lausanne where Goncharova, Larionov and Diaghilev spent the summer of 1915 and Goncharova worked on the designs for the unrealised production Liturgie.
