Black Sea Cossack

oil on canvas

Canvas: 95.5 by 69.5cm, 37½ by 27¼in.

Framed: 117.5 by 92cm, 46¼ by 36¼in.

Please note that the present lot has been requested for the upcoming Ilya Repin exhibition at the Ateneum, Helsinki and the Petit Palais, Paris.

The canvas has been strip-lined. There is a small patch in the upper left quadrant as seen from the reverse and a corresponding area of retouching visible to the naked eye on the recto. There is a very small area of paint loss in his moustache where the canvas has worn thin and a second equally small area in his belt. Craquelure is visible in the impasto in the sitter's left forearm, right hand and pipe. Frame abrasions are visible along the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals the aforementioned area of retouching as well as a few tiny spots of retouching scattered elsewhere. Framed.
