The arms are those of Peel for Sir Robert Peel, 1st Baronet, a politician and industrialist who gained a fortune in the textile industry before being created baronet in 1800. His more famous son, the 2nd Baronet, served twice as Prime Minister, 1834-35 and 1841-46, and twice as Home Secretary. He was a key force in the early years of Victoria's reign, and one of the founders of modern policing with his force of "peelers". Historian A.J.P. Taylor states: "Peel was in the first rank of 19th century statesmen. He carried Catholic Emancipation; he repealed the Corn Laws; he created the modern Conservative Party on the ruins of the old Toryism."
A soup tureen from this service was sold Sotheby's, New York, October 21, 1997, lot 180 and its pair was sold by Lyon & Turner, November 23, 2008, lot 148 ; another pair of sauce tureens is known.
