Estate of Benjamin F. Edwards III, St. Louis, sold

Christie's, New York, October 19, 2012, lot 185

The fantastic rococo chased decoration on the cover includes crayfish, shells, and fishes among sprays of vegetables including turnips, carrots, artichokes, and mushrooms backed by shellwork and pouring water, probably derived from Meissonnier.  The flower and fruit cluster finial rises from three leaves with snails clinging underneath and is capped by a fly.

The arms are those of Leveson-Gower, for John, 1st Earl Gower (1694-1754). He served as Lord Privy Seal from 1742 to 1754, and was made one of the Lords Justices during the King's absence abroad. While George II was in Hanover, Gower raised a regiment in the King's name against the Jacobite uprising of 1745. In recognition he was elevated to the Peerage of Great Britain in 1746.
