A GEORGE II SILVER CUP AND COVER, PAUL DE LAMERIE, LONDON, 1740


the foot cast with shells and leaves, the body applied with leaf and ruffled shell strapwork, matched on cover below the lead finial and in design of the handles, the body engraved with contemporary arms within a rococo cartouche, the same arms engraved on the cover, also engraved under base with the inscription "The Gift of Mrs. Ann Modyford to her Godson Oldfield Bowles, January 1740"

The arms are those of Bowles for Oldfield Bowles of North Aston, Oxfordshire (1739-1810). Bowles was a landowner and noted amateur artist, musician, and botanist, as well as a friend and patron of the painters Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds.


A somewhat similar cup by Lamerie 1736, with the arms of Bridges, was sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, Monaco, June 26, 1984, lot 1222, Collection of Mrs. Florence Gould, illus. The Glory of the Goldsmith, Magnificent silver and gold from the Al-Tajir Collection, no. 74 pp. 104-5, subsequently sold Christie’s, London, June 11, 2003, lot 69.
