The building on the left in the present picture is the Garrison Library, built in 1793 and officially opened by the Duke of Kent in 1804 for the officers of the Gibraltar Garrison. It was also the headquarters of the Gibraltar Chronicle, the second oldest English language newspaper. Halswelle's view is from the higher ground between the library and the Garrison, looking west across the Bay of Gibraltar towards Algeciras. The tower in the centre of the composition is that of the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned.
