A MINIATURE SILVER-GILT, ENAMEL, AND HARDSTONE AUSTRIAN TANKARD

circa 1875


the cylidrical lapis lazuli body with flaring rims decorated with champleve enamel, enameled caryatid handle, the domed lapis cover with cast final of a satyr holding grapes, with fitted case, marked with Austro-Hungarian dog's head silver mark and maker's mark


Hermann Ratzersdorfer, Vienna 

silver-gilt, enamel, and lapis lazuli

height 3 1/4 in.

Hermann Ratzersdorfer was active in Vienna 1843-81. Born 1817 in Pressburg (now Bratislava in Slovakia), his father was an antiquities dealer. By the end of 1843 Hermann moved to Vienna and established himself as a master silversmith, exhibiting at the Viennese Trade Exhibition of 1845, the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, the 1855 Paris Exhibition and others in London & Vienna, respectively in 1871 and 1873. He retired in 1881, turning his business over to his son, Julius.
