EDWARD S. CURTIS | SELF-PORTRAIT
EDWARD S. CURTIS
photogravure, 1899; accompanied by a hand-lettered calling card (Shadowcatcher, p. 32) (2)
10 by 7 in. (25.4 by 17.8 cm.)
This photogravure, on heavy paper with a pleasing sepia tonality and deckle edges, is in generally excellent condition. Upon close examination, a faint Van Gelder watermark is visible. The sheet is appropriately age-darkened, particularly along the edges and in an area corresponding with previous placement of the photographer's calling card in the lower center. The reverse is unevenly age-darkened and there is offsetting from another image.
There is an impression in the shape of a paperclip in the lower right corner of the calling card. There is a Ginny Williams Collection label on the reverse of the mat.
