Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 – a 10 being a print with deep brown dark tones and cream-toned highlights that retains all of its original detail – this print rates an 8. The darkest areas of the print retains a rich chocolate brown tonality but the highlights appear to have faded somewhat. There are some scuffs, impressions, silvering in a few places, and scratches overall. There are deposits of expertly applied modern retouching in several areas, including a scratch that is located over the sitter's right eye and a 7-inch scratch extending from the upper left edge and ending under the sitter's chin. There is a faint, circular light brown stain on the sitter's shoulder. None of these issues detracts from this portrait in a meaningful way, and they are only visible upon close examination in raking light.
The mount is age-darkened, soiled, liquid stained in the lower center, and has some scattered foxmarks. The corners and edges are bumped. The reverse of the mount is discolored overall and soiled in a few places. '301155.16' and '17 [circled]' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil.
