Maria von Trapp's memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, about her family during World War II, inspired the 1959 stage musical, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. This film directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was an adaptation of the stage musical, and features its well-known songs. The film won a total of five Oscars, including Best Film and Best Director, and Irwin Kostal also won Best Music (Scoring of Music – Adaptation or Treatment).
