APPLAUSE (1929) FIRST JAPANESE RELEASE POSTER, 1930

unframed: 23⅝ x 11¾in. (60 x 30 cm)

framed: 36 x 19¼in. (89 x 49 cm)

This 1929 musical, filmed in black-and-white, was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and stars Helen Morgan, Jack Cameron and Joan Peers. It tells the story of a once famous burlesque star, who tries to stop her convent-educated daughter from following the same path that she had taken. It was made during the early years of sound films and was ground-breaking in being shot on location in Manhattan, without the restrictions of heavy sound equipment.

This striking Japanese poster was designed using minimal colours, and beautifully artistic Japanese typography, to create a very effective Art Deco poster. Very few Japanese posters from the 1920s are known to have survived.
