Description

Property from the Collection of Matthew Rutenberg

SWISS SCHOOL, CIRCA 1500

HEAD OF CHRIST

tempera and oil on panel, unframed

panel: 13 by 9⅛ in.; 33 by 23.2 cm.

In style, size, and composition, this small painting can be closely compared to three anonymous heads of Apostles formerly in the Linsky collection and today in the Bob Jones University Museum.1 That they all show bust length figures looking left or right, with similar expressions and gilt halos, suggests that they may have once been part of the same series.
