Some of Rombout van Troyen's works have been confused with those by his mentor, Jan Pynas (1583 - 1631), under whom Van Troyen trained for seven years. Van Troyen painted biblical and mythological scenes set either in mysterious grottoes or Italianate landscapes.

The story depicted in this painting comes from the books of Matthew (15:32-39) and Mark (8:1-9). It shows the moment when Jesus feeds a large crowd with seven loaves and two fishes that miraculously multiply.
