NORTH ITALIAN SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY
PORTRAIT OF A LADY, BUST LENGTH, PLAYING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
oil on canvas
canvas: 22⅛ by 16¼ in.; 56.2 by 41.3 cm.
framed: 36 by 28½ in.; 91.4 by 72.4 cm.
The canvas is lined. A lovely image is visible beneath an old, dirty varnish. There is craquelure scattered throughout with some small paint losses scattered here and there, for example: at center right, upper left background, and on the lady's neck and hair. A thin scratch of about 3 in. is above the woman's head. Further inspection under UV might be impeded by the varnish. The painting is offered in an elaborately carved gilded frame.
