FOLLOWER OF JOHANNES GLAUBER

WOODED LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES AND GOATS RESTING IN THE FOREGROUND, BUILDINGS AND A MOUNTAIN BEYOND

oil on canvas

canvas: 13¾ by 17⅝ in.; 35 by 45.3 cm.

framed: 18 by 22½ in.; 45.7 by 57 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The painting has not been recently restored. It is dirty and the varnish is yellowed, though it still retains some of its atmospheric quality. One stable loss is visible near the curving tree trunk in the upper right sky. More modern retouches, which are scattered throughout, primarily in the darker tones near the edges, have slightly discolored and are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish, beneath which there appears to be an older campaign of restoration. Some strokes and spots are visible in the architectural tower near center, in the lighter tones of the sky and foreground, and in the landscape. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
