FOLLOWER OF GERARD TER BORCH

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN, FULL-LENGTH, STANDING AT A TABLE, WITH A DOG

oil on canvas

canvas: 24⅝ by 19¼ in.; 63 by 49.1 cm.

framed: 34 by 28½ in.; 86.4 by 72.4 cm.

Condition Report

The canvas is lined and is taught and stable on its stretcher. The painted image reads clearly beneath an old and discolored varnish. Some of the details in the scene have been pressed with the relining, and there is a faint craquelure pattern throughout. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish that impedes inspection, and beneath which there may be an older campaign of restoration. More recent restoration is visible in the shadows to the left of the opened book on the table, a thin line through the sitter's proper left hand, and some scattered small cosmetic spots. Older restorations, for example, may be around the flowers, beneath the chair, in the sitter's proper left forearm and hand, as well as in the background. The painting can hang in its present condition. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

In composition and style, this painting by a follower of Gerard ter Borch recalls works from the artist's late career. The dog seated in the lower left corner compares closely to the one found in the lower corner of Gerard and Gesina ter Borch's Memorial Portrait of Moses ter Borch in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.1
