CIRCLE OF SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS, P.R.A.
THREE CHILDREN OUTSIDE A COTTAGE DOOR WITH A CAT
oil on panel
panel: 17¾ by 13 in.; 45.1 by 33 cm.
framed: 22½ by 19 in.; 57.2 by 48.3 cm.
The panel is uncradled, flat, and stable. A lovely image reads well with some slight loss of detail on the darker tones. There is some minor scuffing scattered on the left edge, but this is not too distracting. Inspection under UV reveals some small, scattered retouches in the sky and some inpainting to address craquelure in the child at center and child towards his left. Meanwhile, the child at right has some more concentrated spots of retouching, as well as the clouds at center left. Further retouches could be on the entrance of the cabin, as well as on the rock at bottom where the child sits. The painting can hang in its present state and is offered in a carved, gilded frame.
